With all of the extra time we spent in our Tulsa homes during 2020, many of us came to realize that our space needs some revamping. Walls sometimes feel like they are closing in with too much “stuff”. Use the new year as an excuse to simplify your living space. After all, simple and clean is a current home design trend that does not appear to be going away anytime soon. Let these ideas guide you to a more minimalist approach to your home’s decor.
Minimalist Ideas for Your Tulsa Home
Storage Solutions
It seems like we always search for places to store things in our homes. If the contents of your cupboards and cabinets start spilling out into your living space, it feels cluttered and claustrophobic. Go for a more minimalist, clean approach by adding storage wherever possible. In the kitchen, that could mean adding upper cabinets that reach all the way to the ceiling. A kitchen island also adds a significant amount of storage as well as the added bonus of extra workspace. In the bedroom, purchase rollaway storage bins that fit underneath your bed. Organizational units in your closets help you store more efficiently. If you live in a two-story home, the area under the stairs can easily be transformed into a storage space for holiday decorations and/or other seasonal items.
Shelving
Another way to create a more minimalist look to your Tulsa home is to add shelving. Instead of a huge bookshelf that takes up a large portion of your living room wall, add shelves for books, artwork, and other tchotchkes. These allow the wall to show through between them creating a less crowded feel. Open shelving in the kitchen allows you to add storage spaces without the bulkiness of cabinets. If only open shelving in the kitchen feels a little too scary, install a mixture of cabinets and open shelving instead.
Accentuate With White
When you hear the word “minimalist”, you probably think crisp and clean. And what is cleaner than the color white? Paint the cabinets in your kitchen white. Use white linens in the bedrooms and bathrooms. Add touches of white accents throughout your decor. Even a fluffy white throw changes the look of your family room couch.
Declutter and Donate
Finally, a good way to keep clutter at bay is to go through each room of your Tulsa home and get rid of whatever you do not use. Whether it is clothing, toys, tools, or appliances (big or small), if you have not used or worn it in the last 12 months, get rid of it. Send broken items beyond repair to the trash bin. Donate the rest. Tackle one room at a time over a weekend. Then, you will be on target to finish your entire Tulsa home by spring without feeling overwhelmed.
Good luck with your goal of creating a clutter-free lifestyle in 2021! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all.
