Call To Service: Feed A Neighbor
We have all felt the pangs of a grumbling stomach, but how many of us know what it’s like to be truly hungry, to not be able to afford enough food or nutritious food? More than you may think. According to the USDA’s annual Household Food Security report, a staggering number of Americans – over 49 million – are food insecure. The new Feed A Neighbor program suggests several ways to help…
Launched a couple of weeks ago, United We Serve: Feed A Neighbor is an initiative of the Corporation for National and Community Service in collaboration with the USDA and the White House. The program has two components: to raise awareness of hunger issues and to give Americans resources to combat the problem.
Individuals can download an anti-hunger toolkit and search for volunteer opportunities online. The toolkit includes a description of issues, suggested ways to volunteer, and links to related organizations on topics such as:
• Ensuring children have food in the summer months when school is out
• Supporting food banks and food pantries
• Helping hungry older adults
• Increasing access to fresh produce
• Understanding the issues in your community and developing a plan to end hunger
• To download the Feed A Neighbor toolkit and search for local volunteer opportunities, visit Serve.gov
