Over the past year, most of us spent much more time at home than usual. That gave us a chance to see how well our homes function…or not. Are you thinking about a bathroom remodel? Consider these money-saving tips to help you achieve your goal without breaking the bank.
Bathroom Remodel Money-Saving Tips
Do Not Change the Footprint
Paint. Tile. Fixtures. They cost anywhere from a couple hundred to a couple of thousand dollars to upgrade. But, when you start moving the vanity, toilet, shower, and/or bathtub around, the cost quickly skyrockets into the tens of thousands of dollars. So, my first money-saving tip for a bathroom remodel is to work with your bathroom’s current layout. Keep plumbing where it is to minimize the cost.
Take Your Time
Plan as far in advance as possible for your bathroom remodel. Go over design ideas and finishing touches before you start demolishing anything. This gives you time to order the materials you need and search for a good deal. When you start butting up against a deadline, that is when your stress level rises as well as your costs.
A Little Paint and Powder Go a Long Way
Unless you absolutely must replace something in your bathroom remodel, refinish it instead. Paint cabinets and add new pulls. Frame out an existing mirror for a more polished effect. Even an old bathtub receives a fresh look when you refinish it.
Know Your Limitations
DIY shows on TV make it appear as if anyone can do anything on their own. Remember, there is a whole team of professionals behind the scenes to make things look good on those shows. Most people can handle painting, adding hardware, and even changing out fixtures themselves. But some things may be outside your comfort zone. Be prepared to call in a pro when you need it. This could actually save you money in the long run because you will not have spent money trying it yourself only to have to hire someone to come in and fix what you messed up.
