Pumpkins, Persimmons, & Pomegranates (& Costumes!)
Joshua Tree, California
On Saturday mornings, nestled into the foothills of the Mojave desert, the Joshua Tree farmers’ market welcomes everyone from free-spirited locals to military base families, park rangers, and tourists. We paid a visit to the market last Saturday, picked up some gorgeous persimmons, pomegranates, and other fall gems, and soaked up the friendly, community-oriented vibe.
Not much produce is grown in the desert, but the Joshua Tree farmers’ market gives shoppers the opportunity to purchase relatively local fruits, vegetables, and nuts from Southern and Central California, as well as local eggs, bread from nearby Palm Springs, dates from Indio, and preserves made in Yucca Valley.
On our Halloween morning visit (which also happened to be the second anniversary celebration of the farmer’s market), we spotted a beautiful array of autumn colors and flavors: persimmons, pomegranates, winter squashes and pumpkins, walnuts, apples, pears, and potatoes. Meanwhile, dozens of local kids paraded through the market in their costumes while just about every shopper and vendor stopped to cheer them on.
After picking up some fresh ingredients from the farmers’ market, we dropped by Nature’s Pantry, a small health food store about a block away, and were overwhelmed by the shop owner’s kindness. We highly recommend both stops if you’re ever in Joshua Tree!
