TULSA — The Starkweather family had more to anticipate this week than just the wintry weather; they also were finalists for the television show "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

Blood drive planned
In conjunction with the "Extreme Makeover Home Edition” build, a food drive is being held that will benefit the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma and Standing in the Gap, a food pantry in Owasso. Nonperishable food items can be dropped off at the staging area at the Expo Square Pavilion, 17th Street and Louisville Avenue, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. beginning Saturday. Donations will be accepted throughout the build.
The Tulsa Area Chapter of the American Red Cross also will host a blood drive in conjunction with the project. People can donate from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 12:30 to 5:30 p.m. Monday in the QuikTrip Center at Expo Square.
The knock on the door came Thursday morning and so did the realization that they had been chosen to receive a home remodel.
"We’re still in shock,” Amy Starkweather said. "It’s hard to wrap your head around.”
Amy and Toen Starkweather live in the 1100 block of S Indianapolis Avenue with their three sons, Jared, 15, Ryan, 13, and Ethan, 9.
As an infant, Ethan was diagnosed with Prader-Willi syndrome, a genetic disorder that causes weak muscle tone, low metabolism and constant hunger. People with Prader-Willi syndrome are typically short, have an average IQ of 70 and obesity can be an issue if not monitored.
